When a survey finds asbestos in materials your project will disturb, the material has to come out before — or safely during — the work. Abatement is the regulated removal of asbestos-containing material: contained, wetted, bagged, manifested, and cleared, under NYC DEP and NYS DOL rules.
Clear Advisory manages and supervises asbestos abatement across all five boroughs. Our team holds New York State DOL certifications as Asbestos Contractor and Asbestos Supervisor, with hands-on experience running abatement work — so the removal on your project is set up correctly, documented properly, and finished on schedule.
When Abatement Is Required
- A survey found asbestos above the threshold in materials your renovation or demolition will disturb (generally more than 10 square feet or 25 linear feet) — the ACP-7 notification route.
- Demolition of a structure containing asbestos materials.
- FISP and facade work where positive materials — roofing, coatings, caulk — are in the repair scope.
- Damaged or deteriorating asbestos material that needs to come out before it becomes an exposure problem.
How Abatement Works
- Scope from the survey. The lab results define exactly which materials come out, where they are, and how much of them the work disturbs. No guessing, no over-removal.
- Notification. The ACP-7 Asbestos Project Notification is filed with NYC DEP before work starts, with the project details and schedule.
- Containment and removal. The work area is sealed and held under negative air pressure; material is wetted, removed, and bagged as it's generated. Workers operate under NYS DOL asbestos rules with the required protective equipment and decontamination procedures.
- Waste handling. Removed material is manifested and transported for disposal as regulated asbestos waste, with the paperwork to prove it.
- Clearance. The area is inspected — and air-monitored where the project requires it — so the space is documented clear and your construction work can proceed.

Pricing
Abatement is scoped per project: the cost follows the material, the quantity, and the containment the job requires. If your survey is already done, send us the report and we'll price the removal against it. If it isn't, start with the survey — inspections are scheduled within 1–2 days, with lab results in about 24 hours, and the same team can carry the project from results through removal.
FAQ
My survey found asbestos. What happens next? The positive materials in your work scope need abatement under an ACP-7 notification before or during construction. Your survey report defines the scope — which materials, where, and how much — and the removal is planned from it.
How long does abatement take? It depends on the material and quantity. A single-material residential removal can be days; larger or multi-material projects run longer. The schedule is set before work starts and built into your construction timeline.
Can abatement happen while other work goes on? The contained work area is isolated while removal is underway; work elsewhere in the building can usually continue. Sequencing is part of the planning — that's what supervision is for.
Who supervises the work? A NYS DOL–certified Asbestos Supervisor. Clear Advisory's team holds NYS DOL certifications as Asbestos Inspector, Asbestos Contractor, and Asbestos Supervisor, along with NYC DOB Site Safety Supervisor credentials.
Do you handle the paperwork? Yes — ACP-7 notification, compliance documentation, waste manifests, and clearance records, so your DOB filing and your building's file are complete.
We already have a survey from another firm. Can you still run the abatement? Yes. Send the report; the removal is scoped from its results.
